What's New in CORE POS?
February, 2021
Release 2020.5.1
Review this topic for an overview of the contactless tender functionality which will be enabled in this release of CORE POS. In addition, there are several screen changes at the PIN Pad.
Contactless Tender
This release of CORE POS incorporates the functionality to accept contactless tenders, like Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay in U.S. Stores.
Note: This functionality already exists in Canadian stores.
The functionality in CORE POS relies on the EMV contactless implementation that integrates with CORE POS. Along with the Verifone changes, this allows customers to conduct contactless payments by various options like Card Tap, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung, in addition to the current supported modes (Swipe and Insert).
CORE POS will accept these contactless tenders as payment tender, as well as return/exchange transactions. Card retrieval is also supported via TAP in the return flow. You can also void sales transactions to these tenders normally.
These tenders are part of the current credit/debit tender process. There are no changes on the cashier side. See the Tender with Credit/Debit Card topic.
Customer Experience at Verifone PIN Pad
All new features to accept contactless tenders are customer-facing at the Verifone PIN Pad. See the Contactless Tender Customer Experience topic for details.
PIN Pad Update Process
Contactless tender functionality requires an update to the PIN Pads. The upgrade requires two file uploads to update the PIN Pads. The update process takes about an hour to complete. Start the upload process early enough so that you are able to ring transactions by the time your store opens.
Follow the directions below to update all store PIN Pads:
When the POS is started (using the POS icon on the desktop), CORE POS detects that the PIN Pad needs an update and automatically starts the upload. Once it completes, the POS screen displays as usual.
Important: Do you use the register for any tasks while the downloads are in progress. Also, do not attempt to cancel the updates once started. It may appear that the upload process is frozen, when in fact it is still proceeding.
The following screen displays on the register:
At the same time, the PIN Pad screen displays a row of dashes. As the upload progresses, the dashes are replaced with asterisks, providing a visual indicator of the progress for the upload.
Once the progress bar shows all asterisks, the second stage of the update begins.
Important: DO NOT abort while this process continues. The process can take up to 15 minutes and it may appear as if the register is frozen.
The following screen displays on the register:
When the first upload is complete, the system automatically starts the second upload.
The following screen displays and the process repeats:
When the update completes, the following screen displays:
Select the OK button and the POS launches.
Troubleshooting Common Problems
PIN Pad Not Properly Connected
When the PIN Pad is not correctly connected to the register, the following screen displays:
If this occurs, verify that:
PIN Pad is properly connected to the register as shown in the below photo.
Connections are not loose.
Upload Fails
If a message displays indicating that the upload has failed, select OK and CORE POS will launch. Exit CORE POS and follow the instructions below to retry the upload.
Relaunch CORE POS. The PINMAINT (PIN Pad Maintenance Utility) is triggered again, but this time it prompts: Apply PIN Pad Upload? Select Yes and the upload begins again.
Note: It may take more than one attempt for the upload to successfully complete. Check that the cable is in a location where it will not be jostled. Also, refrain from touching the register while the upload completes.
